Some areas, particularly in southern England and Wales, may see temperatures peaking as high as 38°C midweek. An amber weather warning is in place for extreme heat across parts of central England for Thursday.

Be aware that the areas covered by an amber weather warning may change as the situation evolves.

Temperatures in Scotland are expected to be considerably cooler than the rest of the United Kingdom but will still see highs of 28°C.

East Midlands Railway are advising that unless your journey is essential, you should not attempt to travel.

Liverpool Lime Street - Nottingham - Norwich

Services between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich will run between Sheffield and Norwich only.

To help you complete your journey between Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield, you can use your ticket on the following alternatives at no extra cost:

• Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield
• TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Sheffield

Nottingham - Leicester

Nottingham to Leicester regional stopping services will be withdrawn from 12:00.

Worksop - Mansfield - Nottingham

Worksop to Nottingham route will be withdrawn from 12:00.

If your train is cancelled, you may travel on either of the two services before, or two services after, your original train. If these are peak services or less flexible, you can still travel with your original ticket, at no extra cost.

Impact to services on Thursday 13 August:

The following Northern routes are expected to have a reduced service all day:

• Between Rochdale and Blackburn
• Between Manchester Oxford Road / Wigan Wallgate and Southport
• Between Alderley Edge and Manchester Piccadilly
• Between Buxton / Hazel Grove and Manchester Piccadilly
• Between Rose Hill / Hadfield and Manchester Piccadilly
• Between Sheffield / Doncaster and Hull (a full timetable is still expected to operate from Hull to Scarborough)

The following Northern routes are expected to have a reduced service during the time periods listed below:

• Between Rochdale and Leeds (from approximately 10:15 until 16:30)
• Between Leeds and York via Harrogate (from approximately 10:45 until 15:45)
• Between Sheffield and Leeds (the Yorkshire Flyer fast service will not run from approximately 09:45 until 15:45, however, the stopping services will still operate)

Please note, there will also be no trains operating between Manchester Victoria and Rochdale due to planned engineering work taking place. You can read more information about this on the Status and Disruptions page.

Ticket easements and acceptance:

On Thursday 13 August, customers with a ticket for a cancelled Northern service can use it on an alternative TransPennine Express service at no extra cost.

If you cannot travel on the Northern train you planned as your service is cancelled, you can use your ticket on an East Midlands Railway, West Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway or LNER service to get to your destination within two hours either side of the time of your original cancelled service.

If you have a ticket booked for travel on a Northern train on any of the affected routes on Thursday 13 August but you are unable to travel due to the impact of the extreme weather, you can instead use your ticket on Friday 14 or Saturday 15 August at no extra cost.

Between Manchester Piccadilly and Cardiff Central:

Some services between Manchester Piccadilly and Cardiff Central will be cancelled.

Between Llandudno / Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog:

No trains will run on the Conwy Valley line. Rail replacement transport will run in place of cancelled services. These will be operated by Llew Jones and run at the following times:

• From Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog at 07:50, 10:10, 13:10, 16:10, 19:10
• From Blaenau Ffestiniog to Llandudno at 06:20, 08:40, 11:40, 14:40, 17:40, 20:40

Between Shrewsbury and Birmingham International:

There will no Transport for Wales services running between Shrewsbury and Birmingham International. You can use your ticket at no extra cost on West Midlands Railway services between these stations.

Between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth:

Some services between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth will be cancelled.

Between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central:

Some services between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central will be cancelled. You are advised to travel on the next service.

Replacement buses (provided by Ferris Coaches) will run between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central.

Tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on CrossCountry services between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central.

Thursday 13 August:

Impact to services:

A heavily reduced service is in operation between Birmingham New Street and Cardiff Central.

Road transport will be running between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central.

Your ticket can be used at no extra cost on the following services:

• The two CrossCountry services operating before and after your cancelled service
• Transport for Wales services between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central
• Great Western Railway services between Bristol Parkway / Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central / Gloucester and Ashchurch for Tewkesbury

If you decide to travel from a different station due to this disruption and need to return to that station later, you will also be able to use your existing ticket to do this at no extra cost.

Unfortunately, any seat reservations will not be carried over to another train, but coaches B, H and L are the unreserved coaches on CrossCountry services (where available) so please head to them.

If you no longer wish to travel, you can request a refund via your point of purchase. If you have a ticket that is valid on CrossCountry services only, you can use it to travel on an alternative day up to and including Monday 17 August, at no extra cost.
